Do you ever stop and wonder what makes you happy? In a given moment, a day, a year, and in your life as a whole?
Happiness is something I think a lot about these days. I’ve finally learned how to live in the moment and be happy. To live in a short period of time and find happiness all around me. And, to live from a solid foundation of happiness that sustains me and my life.
It has NOT been an easy journey. But I am living proof that it is possible. It is available to you. And the secret is that it can only come from within.
I haven’t written a blog in more than a week. In part, because I’ve been busy living life to the max and I’ve struggled to find the time. I’ve been off discovering and experiencing so many wonderful and beautiful “firsts” in my life and I don’t yet know which ones to share or even how to write about them – yet.
At the foundation of many conversations that I’ve had this past week is the question of happiness. And when I awoke this morning to start my day, I checked social media and this TEDX-SF talk titled Gratitude by Louie Schwartzberg appeared. The header urged me to take 10 minutes out of my day to watch this video and see if it would change my happiness level for the week.
So, I did. And it did! I invite you to do the same. Just click here, and take a 10 minute time out to explore the question of happiness. For me, this TEDX so eloquently and beautifully communicated that happiness is simple. Perhaps we as humans make it illusive and hard. I found what the older gentleman in this video (at about 4.5 minutes in) says about happiness so impactful and powerful…and so simple. I share parts of it here.
“You think this is just another day in your life. It’s not just another day. It’s the one day that is given to you today. … “One day is a gift. A gift given to you right now and the only appropriate response is gratefulness.
“If you do nothing else but to cultivate that response…if you learn to respond as if it were the first day in your life and the very last day, then you will have spent this day very, very well.
“Begin by opening your eyes…and be surprised that you have eyes you can open. That incredible array of colors that is constantly offered to us for pure enjoyment. Look at the sky. We so rarely look at the sky and note how different is from moment to moment…”
“Open your heart to the incredible gift that is today. To all these blessings and let them flow through you. That everyone you will meet on this day will be blessed by you. Just by your eyes. By your smile. By your touch. Just by your presence. Let the gratefulness overflow into blessing all around you. Then it will really be a good day.”
I love this. It touched me. And the title of this project is perfect: Happiness Revealed. Happiness. Gratitude. It’s that simple.
