In-the-Equation Workshops Offered in MN

Join us Nov. 12, Nov. 19 & Dec. 3 — and let’s make YOU the priority!

ITE_Survival_quote_sqAre you too busy to be healthy? … Too busy to workout. Too busy to cook. Too busy to call a friend for a walk?

How about self-care? Are you taking care of your health and well-being… pursuing your goals and dreams or just taking care of others? Dare I ask: Are you even on your to-do list?

I get it! Most of us juggle many roles and responsibilities and pride ourselves on becoming experts at multitasking. But what happens when we slip out of the equation and end up doing everything for everyone else, with precious little time to care for and nurture ourselves?

At 381 lbs., working 12-18 hours seven days a week, I was the Queen of Busy and Unhealthy! (If there’s a crown for that one, I deserved it!) I wasn’t even in the equation of my own life. Then I found a better way. I put myself in the equation of my own life and lost 200+ lbs. — and most importantly found my healthy, happy and WHOLE life. You can, too!

As I’ve been sharing my transformation story and tips on how to prioritize you, practice self-care, and achieve transformative change in your life – so many people have asked for help. I recently conducted workshops in Maine and was asked — why not Minnesota?! So here you go. Read more

A proud salad makin, meal preppin machine!

And, my dirty little secret to avoid grocery shopping mishaps & stay on plan!

Blog series: The restart

2016-06-12 16.26.58 This is how I spent my Sunday afternoon — prepping salads in an assembly line, grilling fresh veggie kabobs with a titch of olive oil and garlic, and readying the second shift for the grill — an awesome new turkey burger recipe, fresh grilled asparagus and lean grilled pork chops. And I did it all in about 1.5 hours.

For someone who hated to cook, and who just over five years ago was lucky to eat one salad every few months, I’m pretty proud of my Sunday meal preppin skills. It’s absolutely one of the keys to my success at weight maintenance and living a healthy lifestyle. And when I need a restart, like right now, I get right back on plan and crank the tunes, create a colorful salad assembly line and embark on meal prepping for the entire week.

If you struggle to eat healthy or stay on your clean eating program, I’m guessing that lack of time is one of the reasons. Any chance preparation and planning would help? Try it. I’m guessing — YES!

My go-to snacks for weight loss

Part of our getting back to basics — nuts & bolts blog series

fruitsnack-cottagecheeseI eat four to five times per day to maintain my healthy weight. And I lost more than 200 lbs. on a nutrition plan that had me eating between four and six times per day consistently.

Why eat so often? I learned that to keep my metabolism stoked, I needed to eat regularly scheduled, smaller meals, more frequently. And skipping meals does NOT work. At least not long-term, because it puts your body into starvation mode and your metabolism then works against you.

At least two of my meals every day are snacks. I used to laugh when I was in fat-loss mode and my coach called 12 almonds and 3 ounces of turkey a meal. To me, it’s a snack. But I love snacks! They can be very important not just when you’re in weight-loss mode, but to healthy eating and living. Healthy snacks are also important for kids to help prevent obesity.

How many snackers do we have out there?

Well, here’s my #1 tip: Snack! Whatever your weight loss plan, do NOT skip meals. It doesn’t work and there is lots of evidence to prove it. When you reach for a mid morning or afternoon snack, make it a good one — to me that means low carb, include protein, and make it something YOU enjoy! Read more

A funny for this Friday

losingweight-funnyHappy Friday peeps!

Here’s a fun one to brighten your day and let you know I’m thinking about you. If you are reading this, I hope you get a chuckle and have a great day.

Forgive the tardiness of this week’s blog. I’ve been on the road in Downeast Maine on an “In the Equation” tour. I had a great time at some of Maine’s most exciting and innovative companies exploring employee wellness efforts and speaking at the Bangor YMCA to a group of peeps just starting a Biggest Mover Challenge. (A BIG shout out to each and every one of you. You’ve got this! And, I welcome you to our In the Equation community.)

My recent trip has inspired blogs about the very topic of this funny — how to keep your weight off and stay healthy for life, fall hiking, and more.

Yep, I’m back in the saddle so stay tuned in the coming weeks and if you’ve got a topic to suggest, let me know. For now, be well and be in your equation.

XXOOOOO

You are what you eat. Uh oh!

March is National Nutrition Month. What kind of fuel are you putting in your body?

fruit for breakfastDid you know that fruit is a carb? How about that a chicken breast & a doughnut have about the same calories? But, boy, oh boy, do they get processed differently in your body.

In celebration of March being National Nutrition Month, I thought it would be fun to start the week off with a blog about nutrition.

When I started my transformational weight loss journey, I didn’t know that fruit is a natural carbohydrate. And I was sketchy on details about good and bad carbs all together. Read more

Beautiful women. Beautiful stories. Beautiful day.

Lori at Duluth Women's Expo 2015The winter weather was gorgeous last Saturday and so were the women who came out to hear me share my transformation story at the Duluth Women’s Expo. We had a full house, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the incredible women who attended.

I love speaking to women’s groups. There is such energy and eagerness among women to “better themselves” — to strive to reach their full potential. As women we’re often our own harshest critics, but most of us also have an innate desire to become more self-aware and to make ourselves and the world a better place. That energy and focus was prevalent in the crowd on Saturday. Read more

Do one good thing every day for your health. Let me know what happens.

10927214_953709967996259_1130776400138618197_oWhat would happen if you did one good thing for your  health every day…and then kept doing it consistently? What if you took just one small step and started moving to a happier and healthier you?

Would you feel better…look better…have more energy…be able to do more? Would you become better at putting yourself in the daily equation and prioritizing you? Good, healthy eats for Fall. Yum!

fall-foods-superfruit-400x400I absolutely LOVE Fall! Love it. It’s my all-time favorite season because it not only yields gorgeous leaves and great hiking and play- outside weather, but some fantastic locally grown food.

In fact, one of my favorite things about Fall is the fresh, healthy food — apples, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, pears, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and more! Not to mention all of the fun and “healthy” recipe blogs making their way into cyberspace. Yum!

I try to eat seasonal, fresh and local when I can. And since I spend my time in both Minnesota and Maine, I get lots of amazing seafood and produce this time of year. This Fall, I’ve vowed to tackle some new healthy recipes.

So, today, in celebration of Fall, I’m sharing some of the new healthy and seasonal recipes that are on my go-to list. I invite you to share your favorite fall food recipes, here, too. The more the merrier! Read more
