My In the Equation morning ritual

Cardio with a twist!

Como Lake Light on DucksThis summer I’ve adopted a new morning ritual and this morning I realized it and deemed it as such. It’s my “in the equation” start to every day and it totally works for me.

For almost three months, I’ve evolved my morning routine to include this 45 min ritual. It combines my preferred form of cardio — power walking in a beautiful place, preferably around or near water — with a couple of simple mental practices that help me throughout my day.

Also, because I’m on the move and living part-time in Minnesota and part-time in Maine, it allows me to have a daily practice that is consistent and helps me focus mind, body and spirit before the day ensues — no matter where I am. It helps ground me. Read more

The power of sharing my story with the world

It’s no secret that I am extroverted and people driven. I love connecting with people in both my personal and professional life. It comes natural, and I tend to be more open than many.

That said, the decision to share intimate details of my lifelong battle with obesity and subsequent transformation did not come easy. In fact, there are still moments of uncomfortableness with being so public about something so very personal. But those moments are almost always short lived and overshadowed by the overwhelming positives of sharing my personal transformation story with the world. Read more

Going 100% all in!

LoriSchaefer-After3Many of you who know my story or who have heard me speak, know that I live by the mantra – “I’m 100% all in!”

Going “all in” means going for it. Committing 100% with no holds barred, no excuses. Pushing past fear, emotional struggle and mindset blocks to give something everything you have because you know in your heart (and your gut) it is totally right! It means getting up when you fall, slip or fail and getting right back on the path. It’s knowing that if you keep walking, working and recommitting you will get there. And it is totally AWESOME!

Going “all in” is not easy. Nor is it for the faint of heart. Read more

Strong vs skinny. Fit girls unite!

LoriSchaefer-After-6I’ve read several articles in the past few weeks about being fit and strong vs. skinny. The truth is, I used to dream about being skinny. But really, skinny was just a term. Ultimately, even though I said and dreamt “skinny,” I really wanted to be fit, active and healthy.

Well, I can now say without question that I am fit, active, healthy and strong. I celebrate strong. And you should, too.

Many women fear that if they lift heavy weights or do strength training on an ongoing basis, they will develop “man muscles.” I used to be one of those women. That was until I learned from my trainers and reading the research that strength training indeed helps burn stored body fat and build lean tone muscle. Repeat: Strength training helps burn fat and build muscle.

It is the quickest and most effective path to a leaner, stronger and healthier body. Read more

One years sans 200 lbs…my new reality

Taking stock one year after -200+ lb weight loss: Fit, active & healthy…
embracing life & reality from the center of my equation

Lori at one year - first "little" black dressThis is one of the toughest blogs I’ve written in two and a half years. I had intended to post it on the one-year  anniversary of my -211 lb weight loss (May 11, 2013) but it wasn’t ready. The words were not flowing as easily as I had hoped. The truth is, I am more proud of this accomplishment – maintaining my goal weight and living fully in the center of my equation as a healthy, happy and fit “girl” – than I am of getting here in the first place.

Don’t get me wrong. Shedding more than 200 pounds and going from a body fat percentage of 60+% to 14.5%, learning to live in the center of my equation for the first time ever, sharing my story for the world to see, and loving and accepting myself along the way – those are incredible, incredible accomplishments for which I am forever grateful and extremely proud! Life changing. And nothing will diminish that. Read more

Embracing my competitive spirit & mud to boot!

Most people who know me would say that I have a competitive side. Some might argue that is the understatement of the year! I like to think of it is a “healthy competitive spirit” (smile) and I KNOW it is one of the qualities that led to my success in losing 200+ pounds over the past 18 months.

Each rep, each set, each step

I came across this quote online and at the same time discovered Erin Stern. Holy crap that girl is fit! Of course I had no idea who she was until I googled. And, I am quite certain the old me would have judged her upon appearance alone quite harshly (perhaps out of jealousy). Read more
