There is nothing wrong with imperfection

In fact, says Beth Probst: “I’ve found the greatest joy in things I genuinely suck at.”

imagesI’m coming off another rough night with little sleep. So this morning while I laced up my tennis shoes and sipped my first cuppa joe, I read this beautiful blog titled: Back of the Pack, by my friend and colleague, Beth Probst. (Yes, I am a multi-tasker even at 5:30 a.m.)

Beth describes herself as a “Mom. Communicator. Photographer. Gardener. Coffee Lover. Explorer. Living the simple but awesome and authentic life in NW Wisconsin.” I describe her as “kick-ass at expressing herself in the written word in a real, authentic and approachable way.” She is inspiring.

Back of the Pack,” is my favorite of Beth’s blogs to date. In it she shows us that it’s okay not to be perfect. It’s okay not to achieve your goals, but to finish anyway. She writes about running, about passion and finding hers, and about the beauty of screwing up. Read more

Ever use the excuses: “I hate to exercise,” “I can’t do it,” or “I can’t afford it”?

lori-sean-workoutHow about? “I’m intimidated by the gym. I feel like people are staring at me.” “I can’t find the time, I’m too busy.” “I’m not a morning person.” Did I miss any?

We all know that we need to take care of our bodies and exercise to lose weight, to increase our strength and mobility, to tone our muscles and keep our shape as we age, to reduce our risk of obesity-related diseases like stroke, heart disease and diabetes. Yet, we have every excuse in the book for why we can’t or don’t do it.

I know this story all to well because I lived it. I used every excuse listed and then some! Read more

10927214_953709967996259_1130776400138618197_oWhat would happen if you did one good thing for your  health every day…and then kept doing it consistently? What if you took just one small step and started moving to a happier and healthier you?

What is this gym going to teach me today?

“What is this gym going to teach me about myself, today?” — Trainer Bob Harper, Season 16 Biggest Loser

Ready to work out - 2014!

When I heard this quote from my favorite trainer on NBC’s Biggest Loser tonight, I knew I had to finish and hit publish on the blog I started this morning. And I knew that quote had to be the lead.

What a powerful question for anyone (like me…and perhaps you) who once feared, loathed and avoided the gym only to years later “find her best self” in the gym by pushing past mental limits to find her true potential — inside and out. Read more

Monday morning motivation – three tips

Three nutritional tips that will change your health and how you feel…for good

Speaking-OnealHamptonWellnessFair.jpg

Lori Schaefer of intheequation.com speaking at the 2014 O’Neal Hampton Wellness Fair.

Happy Monday morning peeps! Are you ready? It’s going to be a great kick off to a great week! Here’s a little Monday motivation.

This past weekend, I had the privilege of speaking to a small group at the O’Neal Hampton Wellness Fair about my core message: “How to put yourself in the center of your own life and achieve your big, hairy audacious goals.” The Wellness Fair was hosted by O’Neal Hampton of NBC’s Season 9 Biggest Loser — and if you know my story — he was my hope, inspiration and mentor in my transformation journey. The Wellness Fair benefits the O’Neal Hampton Wellness Foundation, check it out. I love to spend time with “Unc” O’Neal and his peeps. And I love sharing my story and helping others who battle some of the same challenges.

Another great speaker at the Wellness Fair was local Fox 9 News fitness and nutrition expert, Ali Holman, of CoreCamper. Ali shared 3 nutritional tips — things you can start doing today — to change your health and fitness trajectory and take care of your body. I loved her speech and, in fact, have shared these same tips with people that I coach when they are just starting out. At the Wellness Fair we promised Ali we would help carry the message. So here you go.

If you make just these three nutritional changes, Ali said, you’ll change your health, see results and feel better. Ali, I totally agree! All three are changes that were part of my nutritional program in the very beginning and they are now my weight maintenance/healthy living program for life. Read more

Should you exercise when you’re sick?

This makes me laugh so I wanted to share. I needed a chuckle today. Hope it works for you, too!

I came down with a bad cold this past weekend, just as I was getting on a roll again with my “Lori in the equation healthy living.” This includes a 5-6x per week exercise routine. So I didn’t want to stop.

On Sunday, I trained and it wasn’t pretty. I was slow and lethargic throughout my workout, but surprisingly felt better after. This morning was definitely a no go. I went to bed last night with a fever, chills and aches all over — this on top of the basic cold symptoms.

This left me wondering, “Should you work out when you’re sick? What do the professionals say?” I am in a no-excuses mode of healthy living so I don’t want to use being sick as an excuse. But I don’t want to be stupid either. Read more

My first Color Me Rad 5K!

Lori-Christine-official-ColormeRad.jpgI just completed my first ever Color me Rad 5k in Madison, WI, over Labor Day Weekend with my college girlfriend, Christine. It was a blast!

In a spontaneous and last minute decision, I decided to head to Madison to raise a little hell with my awesome college friend, Christine. It was a weekend of firsts — my first ever Color Me Rad, actually my first 5K; my first BadgerFest (FUN!); and my first visit to Taste of Madison. It was an absolutely fun-filled girls weekend. And, no, not all the activities will make the blog! Some of what happened in Madison, stays in Madison! 😉 Read more

If you’re still moving toward your goals – you’re winning!

Feb. 2012 - Balance For Life 172This is the week that gyms start to thin out and more than 70 percent of those who set New Year’s resolutions stop pursuing them. (See NY Resolution stats here.)

Feb. 2012 - Balance For Life 178I have always been one to pride myself on defying the odds, so I used that as extra motivation this morning when the very last thing I wanted to do was get up and go work out. Read more
