Join the “Do One Thing” Challenge

Do one good thing every day for your health. Let me know what happens.

10927214_953709967996259_1130776400138618197_oWhat would happen if you did one good thing for your  health every day…and then kept doing it consistently? What if you took just one small step and started moving to a happier and healthier you?

Would you feel better…look better…have more energy…be able to do more? Would you become better at putting yourself in the daily equation and prioritizing you? Would you gain momentum because your one action inspired other positive action for a healthier you? Maybe you would inspire others in your family to join you? Yes! I think so. In fact, I know so. A butt-kicking boost at the Blue Hill YMCA

A great workout. A great asset to the community.

1234016_599214096768301_528006466_nI just finished a butt-kicking workout at The Blue Hill YMCA. The one-hour class was called “Fall Fitness Mixup” and included a 15-min warm up, followed by a high-energy cardio circuit training and a cool down stretch. It was my first class at the local YMCA in Maine and it was GREAT!

Sometimes we don’t realize how lucky we are to have opportunities all around us for achieving our health and fitness goals — especially when we’re feeling unmotivated or stuck. The fact is, we all feel this way at times. It’s what we do during those “stuck” times that matters most.

I first discovered The Blue Hill YMCA this early summer upon the referral of a new friend who took the time to introduce me to the lead trainers and managers. I was welcomed immediately. I got a personal tour of the workout space and a meeting with co-managers Annie Grindal and Joy Bragdon. It’s then that I learned the story of how this awesome little YMCA has grown to a full six-day schedule — year round — in a small community that values health and fitness.

I was instantly hooked. Read more

Good, healthy eats for Fall. Yum!

fall-foods-superfruit-400x400I absolutely LOVE Fall! Love it. It’s my all-time favorite season because it not only yields gorgeous leaves and great hiking and play- outside weather, but some fantastic locally grown food.

In fact, one of my favorite things about Fall is the fresh, healthy food — apples, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, pears, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and more! Not to mention all of the fun and “healthy” recipe blogs making their way into cyberspace. Yum!

I try to eat seasonal, fresh and local when I can. And since I spend my time in both Minnesota and Maine, I get lots of amazing seafood and produce this time of year. This Fall, I’ve vowed to tackle some new healthy recipes.

So, today, in celebration of Fall, I’m sharing some of the new healthy and seasonal recipes that are on my go-to list. I invite you to share your favorite fall food recipes, here, too. The more the merrier! Read more

Hiking! Mountains! Happy!

I am a hiker. There is perhaps nothing I love more right now than tackling a tough trail or a tall mountain and being out in the beautiful God-given outdoors/wilderness! I love the adrenaline rush, the challenge, the smells, and the sights and sounds of natural beauty all around me. I love the challenge of pushing myself faster, harder, steeper. And, the combination of all of the above — well, it makes me happy..and fit! Read more

Her secret is patience

It’s been one week since my first half marathon and I am in a very different place today than I was a week ago. Last Sunday I was on an emotional and physical high after completing the Women’s Half Marathon in Bloomington. I was feeling strong and fit, and planning future races. My body didn’t ache like I expected. While there was some minor muscle fatigue, I felt great and was back race walking and strength training three days post marathon…and grinning from ear to ear. My word is “enough”

eatpraylovequoteThis past week, I watched the movie Eat, Pray, Love with a friend. I’ve read the book and seen the movie four times now and honestly I love everything about it (not the least of which is Javier Bardem!).

For those of you unfamiliar, the main character Liz Gilbert (Julie Roberts) embarks on a person quest around the world to find herself. She travels to Italy, India and Bali.

Eat, Pray, Love is a story of personal transformation and a spiritual quest. It’s about discovering and loving your true self before you can truly be in relationship with others. It’s a quest for forgiveness — whether of bitter old resentments that keep you stuck, or forgiveness of yourself. It’s a transformation journey — a very beautifully lived and written journey by famous author Elizabeth Gilbert. Read more

Embracing my competitive spirit & mud to boot!

Most people who know me would say that I have a competitive side. Some might argue that is the understatement of the year! I like to think of it is a “healthy competitive spirit” (smile) and I KNOW it is one of the qualities that led to my success in losing 200+ pounds over the past 18 months.
