Sugar turns you into a junkie.

suargraphicLast June, after a six-hour hike/climb in Acadia National Park in Maine, I stopped in a cute little chocolate shop in Bar Harbor and rewarded myself with an ice cream cone and a cookie. I was at goal weight and didn’t eat that stuff regularly, but had just worked out really hard and I was on vacation so I thought it was Okay. NOT!

That instantly set off a sugar craving/binge that lasted hours and turned into days. When I tell people this story, I tell them that I was so into my sugar binge and felt so out of control, that if you had put a gun to my head and challenged me not to eat it, I am not sure it would have mattered. I felt out of control. Then, with every intention of stopping and never doing that again, I did it again. Read more

Know your nutrition facts…it matters!

nutrition-lies Exposing the nutritional lies that make us sick and fat.

Don’t get me started on this topic. There is so much conflicting and misinformation out there that you need a PhD in research and a whole lot of time to know if what you’re eating is good for you or will help achieve your goals.

When I first entered my fat loss program in late 2010, I had a lot to learn about nutrition. Truth be told, I didn’t know fruit was a carb. But, much of what I thought I knew — like low fat or fat free is best — I had to unlearn! In short, to transform my body and get healthy I had to start by getting educated and learn to read labels (always and especially the fine print.) You can do it too. Read more

Feeling peachy

I love peachesHave you ever noticed how much better something tastes when you haven’t had it in a long time? Somehow it’s easier to appreciate the natural flavors and textures of a food after you’ve been deprived for awhile. It feels like a “treat!”

This week, I ate my first peaches in three years. They were sweet, juicy and delicious! I savored every bite and wondered why they had not been a regular part of my nutritional program during fat loss or part of my life/maintenance nutritional plan now. To be honest, I can’t tell you why. Read more

Here’s to a healthy, happy Labor Day!

color me radHi peeps. Wishing you all a happy and healthy Labor Day weekend. Make it a good one. And a long weekend of YOU in the center of your equation.

Some think this holiday marks the end of summer, but I’m determined to celebrate summer a bit longer. I’m off to Madison, WI to hang with one of my favorite friends in the world and we’ve been known to raise a little hell in our time together. Can’t wait! We’re making it a fun and healthy weekend by doing the Color me Rad 5K in Madison tomorrow – another first for me. And, my intent is to stay on my nutritional plan with some healthy and fun grillin and summer salads (plus a few libations, of course!). Read more

A healthy State Fair? Yep. Doable.

statefair-Today is day five of the Minnesota State Fair – an awesome event Minnesotans have come to know as the Great Minnesota Get Together. Or, as the Star Tribune referred to it — “the annual communal pig-out!”

Yes, it’s 12 days of late summer fun…and more fried food on a stick than, well, you can shake a stick at.

Many people go to the State Fair for the food alone. In fact, most people don’t enter the fairgrounds expecting to feast on healthy or nutritional items. And this year, the State Fair is boasting the addition of more than 40 cholesterol-clogged, plunked on-a-stick options. Yikes. Read more

The 7-Day In Your Equation Challenge

intheequation-summermountain-lorischaeferJuly 19-25, 2013

Okay, peeps. It’s accountability time. For me and for you! After a short period of “slippage” on life with Lori-in-the-equation, it’s time to restart. To get back in the center of the equation and with my health and wellness goals top of mind. Who’s with me?!

Today, I issued a 7-day In Your Equation Challenge. To accept the challenge and participate, you must commit to being 100% all in on being in your equation – whatever that means to you. It can be as detailed and specific as you like. But, perhaps most importantly, it affords you the opportunity to think about and define what being in your equation really means…to you. How do you best honor yourself and meet your health and wellness needs?

Carbs trigger food cravings…YEP!

sugar-addictionMy personal battle with sugar and how I am winning!

Okay, I don’t mean to be a cynic — but, really?! Some of us know this and live it every day.

The June 27, 2013 New York Times article titled: How Carbs Can Trigger Food Cravings, seems a bit late to the party. It reports a new study that shows all calories are not created equal and that “sugary foods and drinks, white bread and other processed carbohydrates that are known to cause abrupt spikes and falls in blood sugar appear to stimulate parts of the brain involved in hunger, craving, and reward.”

One years sans 200 lbs…my new reality

Taking stock one year after -200+ lb weight loss: Fit, active & healthy…
embracing life & reality from the center of my equation

Lori at one year - first "little" black dressThis is one of the toughest blogs I’ve written in two and a half years. I had intended to post it on the one-year  anniversary of my -211 lb weight loss (May 11, 2013) but it wasn’t ready. The words were not flowing as easily as I had hoped. The truth is, I am more proud of this accomplishment – maintaining my goal weight and living fully in the center of my equation as a healthy, happy and fit “girl” – than I am of getting here in the first place.

Don’t get me wrong. Shedding more than 200 pounds and going from a body fat percentage of 60+% to 14.5%, learning to live in the center of my equation for the first time ever, sharing my story for the world to see, and loving and accepting myself along the way – those are incredible, incredible accomplishments for which I am forever grateful and extremely proud! Life changing. And nothing will diminish that. Read more
